AI native security is the new baseline

Security can no longer ride shotgun to AI; it must drive. At MIT Technology Review’s EmTech AI conference on May 1, 2026, a session titled Cyber-Insecurity in the AI Era delivered a blunt forecast: as AI embeds itself deeper in every layer of tech stacks, the attack surface grows, and legacy, bolt-on defenses won't cut it.
The session centered on Tarique Mustafa, cofounder and CEO/CTO of GCCybersecurity and its data compliance spinout Chorology. Mustafa is described as a prolific inventor with USPTO patents and a track record in knowledge representation, AI planning, and autonomous cybersecurity systems. He outlined how his companies have built an autonomous data protection framework that scales across multi-cloud environments, emphasizing data classification, data loss prevention (DLP), and data security posture management (DSPM). In practical terms, he and his team have architected core AI algorithms powering what they call their 4th and 5th generation fully autonomous data leak protection and exfiltration platform. That pedigree matters because it signals a shift from reactive alerts to AI-driven, self-healing security workflows.
From a practitioner’s perspective, the core takeaway is straightforward: AI is not a layer you add after you ship a product. It must be baked into the security stack from the ground up. The reason is simple and alarming. AI can automate and accelerate both defense and offense. Attackers are not standing still; they are increasingly leveraging AI to skim through data, craft more convincing phishing, and probe networks with unprecedented speed. In Mustafa’s framing, defenders need smart, autonomous AI that can classify sensitive data, monitor movements in real time, and intervene before exfiltration happens, all while meeting compliance and privacy requirements. The emphasis on data-centric protection, data loss prevention (DLP), sampling, and DSPM, reflecting a broader industry trend, the security outcome hinges on knowing where data lives, how it moves, and who touches it, across clouds, apps, and devices.

The forces at play are bigger than any single product. As AI staking grows, so does the duty to secure it with systems designed to understand data, actions, and intent at scale. Mustafa’s work and the EmTech framing imply a near-term shift: startups and incumbents alike must rearchitect security around AI, or risk losing control of both risk and resilience in a increasingly automated digital landscape.
