BMW E-Drive Line Adds 46 Robots

PIA Automation is developing an E-Drive assembly line for BMW Group in Steyr, Austria.

Robotics and Automation News reports 78 processing stations, 27 robot cells, and 46 industrial robots.

The line will cover more than 5,600 square meters across two levels.

It will first build electric-vehicle transmissions. It will then join transmissions with electric motors.

That final join happens in a robotic “marriage” cell. Twelve synchronized screwdrivers fasten the parts at once.

How digital twin work fits

PIA Automation is using a digital twin and virtual commissioning during engineering and implementation.

The digital model maps axes, sensors, material flow, and field-device behavior.

According to Robotics and Automation News, this can find errors, collisions, and improvement areas before physical commissioning.

The aim is to reduce late changes during line startup.

The line is also designed to handle different transmission variants in batch sizes of one.

Automatic gripper changes support those variant shifts without manual work.

Operations watchpoints

The system will record torque, tightening angles, and force-displacement curves for each unit.

BMW’s existing software environment will control and monitor the automation system.

Final production-line sections are scheduled for commissioning in 2027.
