Dyson unveils its most powerful cordless vacuum yet
By Riley Hart
At 900 watts and 70 minutes, Dyson just turned cordless vacuuming into a power play. The Dyson V16 Piston Animal lineup, announced as the brand’s flagship cordless platform, marks a bold step forward in pet hair and multi-surface cleaning. The launch includes both the standard V16 Piston Animal and the wet-and-dry V16 Piston Animal Submarine, continuing a line Dyson first teased at last year’s Dyson Unveiled event.
Dyson positions the V16 as its most powerful cordless platform to date, built around a redesigned 900-watt Hyperdymium motor that delivers up to 315 air watts of fade-free suction. Real-world performance on a single charge is advertised at up to 70 minutes, a figure that should appeal to households tackling large cleanup tasks without frequent recharging. The system is designed for homes with pets and long hair, featuring the All Floor Cones Sense cleaner head. This head uses dual conical brush bars to actively detangle and remove hair while automatically adapting suction and brush-bar performance to different floor types, a feature that could reduce the amount of toggling between surfaces during a single cleaning session.
A key part of Dyson’s claim to power is not just raw suction but its sensing ecosystem. A real-time dust level and floor condition monitoring system continuously adjusts the vacuum’s output to optimize efficiency and capture. The V16 also employs a fully sealed HEPA-grade filtration system that traps 99.99 percent of particles as small as 0.3 microns, addressing concerns about allergens and fine dust in what Dyson describes as a complete clean from floor to air. An integrated LCD screen communicates power mode, maintenance alerts, remaining runtime, and cleaning performance data, giving users a clear readout of how the machine is performing mid-clean.
The V16 package includes a versatile accessory lineup designed for diverse cleaning tasks. A Motorbar style anti-tangle cleaner head helps tackle long hair, complemented by a hair screw tool, a standard combination tool, and a crevice tool. The platform also introduces a removable battery, easing maintenance and potential upgrades, alongside a set of features that align with Dyson’s broader emphasis on modular, serviceable design.
For practitioners and shoppers weighing the upgrade, the V16 Piston Animal represents a notable inflection point in the cordless vacuum market. The combination of a high output motor, adaptive cleaning head, and real-time sensing raises the bar for pet owners and multi-surface homes, where hair and debris accumulate across rugs, hardwood, and tiles. The Submarine variant expands the idea of versatility into wet and dry cleanup, a niche Dyson has explored with other lines, but here tethered to the same high-performance platform.
Two practitioner takeaways emerge. First, the removable battery and a modular toolset tilt the economics toward longer-lived components rather than single-device disposability. If battery life holds up under real-world use, the V16 could offer lower lifetime replacement costs than competing systems that rely on fixed power packs. Second, the All Floor Cones Sense system exemplifies a broader industry shift toward intelligent cleaning that self-optimizes for different substrates. In practice, customers will want to see how firmware updates affect performance over time and whether the sensing system can adapt to unusual floor coverings or hybrid homes without manual fiddling.
Still, there are caveats to watch. The elevated feature set and the inclusion of a wet-dry variant suggest a premium price tier, and consumers will be watching for how weight, ergonomics, and maintenance burden align with the claimed performance gains. Dyson’s approach signals a market expectation that cordless vacuums will not only be stronger but smarter and more adaptable than ever before, with pet owners in particular benefiting from enhanced hair management, filtration, and runtime.
In the months ahead, real-world testing will reveal how this platform translates from model specs to everyday reliability. If the V16 delivers as advertised, it could redefine consumer expectations for cordless cleaning power and push competitors to elevate their own sensor-driven, surface-aware designs.
