Humanoid Learns Sparse Bar Traversal

What Changed

Researchers describe a control system for humanoids moving through sparse 3D structures.

The test task used monkey bars. The robot had to jump up, move across bars, and land safely.

According to arXiv, the system uses a head-mounted solid-state lidar. It processes raw lidar scans with an attention-based encoder and memory.

The training method combines separate expert policies for jumping up, moving across bars, and jumping down.

Hardware Results

The paper reports 14 full-sequence completions in 15 hardware trials.

Those trials used three bar layouts. The reported top bar-traversal speed was 0.5 meters per second.

The team also modeled lidar noise, battery-voltage sag, and actuator heat limits for hardware transfer.

Passive hook end-effectors helped the humanoid hold and move along the bars.

Deployment Reality

This is a research hardware demonstration, not a stated commercial deployment.

The reported result covers a narrow task with configured bar structures.

The paper also reports a separate policy that ducks beneath thin overhead obstacles. Those obstacles had 2-centimeter cross-sections.

Key unknowns remain. No independent confirmation was supplied. The evidence does not show long-run uptime, worker safety, recovery from failures, or performance in unplanned sites.
