Narwal is testing a perception system that combines two front-facing fisheye cameras with LiDAR. Founder and CEO Junbin Zhang told Vacuum Wars that the compact system performed better in Narwal’s testing than its previous double-eye vision system for obstacle avoidance and object detection.
That result is a company claim, not an independently measured comparison. Narwal is currently testing the system in China, and Zhang said it would reach customers next year. The specific robot, release date, price and availability outside China remain unannounced.
The potential cleaning benefit is practical. Zhang said Narwal’s AI can help robots identify objects more precisely, including pet waste, so they can move around hazards that should not be cleaned directly because they could damage the machine. The aim is not just to spot obstacles, but to recognize what they are and choose a safer response.
The camera hardware already in Narwal’s double-eye system uses two fisheye cameras at the robot’s front. Zhang said those cameras have 1080p resolution and that Narwal began using double-eye vision in 2024. The newer proposal adds LiDAR to that arrangement; the interview does not explain the system’s technical processing or provide test conditions, sample sizes or measurements.
For shoppers, the total cost is currently unknowable: Narwal has not identified the product or set a price. The system deserves attention as a promising obstacle-avoidance upgrade, but it is still a development being tested in China—not a named product to buy today. Wait for a specific model, pricing and independent testing before treating it as a purchase option.
