UNICEF Deploys Disaster-Response Robots for Rapid Needs Assessment

The program outfits Boston Dynamics Spot units with LiDAR, thermal cameras and mesh radios. DroneSeed contributes long-endurance quadcopters that map debris and relay connectivity to response teams.

UNICEF trialed the system in the Philippines, where robots entered flood-damaged schools to assess structural integrity before staff re-entered. Data synced to a UNICEF logistics hub, guiding delivery of medical supplies and temporary classrooms.

The organization is building a global roster of trained operators drawn from local emergency teams. UNICEF says it will publish open training modules so other NGOs can replicate the robotics playbook.
