Home Assistant Projects: Clever, Not Robotics

These DIY ideas add alerts and device links. They are not physical robotics projects.

What Changed

How-To Geek highlighted three Home Assistant uses for overlooked spaces and older gear.

One project hides an LED strip inside IKEA’s VÅRDTRÄD plant pot. Its semi-clear base becomes a colored status light.

The power lead runs through the pot’s water-fill channel. The owner uses a fake plant instead.

That tradeoff matters. The pot can no longer work as a self-watering planter.

How-To Geek also suggests reusing old Zigbee USB dongles. A dongle can run a separate Zigbee network from a better spot.

It may help reach devices in a garage or other distant area. Some dongles can become powered Zigbee repeaters after firmware changes.

Old Bluetooth USB adapters may add Bluetooth support to Home Assistant. That could connect devices such as SwitchBot finger robots and moisture sensors.

Cost and Setup Catch

No prices were provided for the plant build or USB projects.

You may save money if you already own the hardware. You still need a Home Assistant host and time to set it up.

How-To Geek names a Raspberry Pi as one option for a separately placed Zigbee dongle.

Bluetooth support is not certain with every old adapter. How-To Geek says older adapters can be less reliable.

Verdict: Wait

Wait, unless you already run Home Assistant and own spare parts.

These are personal DIY builds, not new consumer products. They may solve narrow home problems, but total cost and setup work remain unknown.

The biggest unresolved questions are part compatibility, needed firmware, and long-term reliability.
