E-Device lets operators use a tablet or PC to program, simulate, monitor, and manually control compatible robots with physical safety controls.
ABB Robotics has launched E-Device, a compact safety interface for OmniCore-powered robots and cobots. It connects the familiar OmniCore User Interface to a user’s tablet or PC, giving users the same robot controls available through ABB teach pendants.
The main change is where preparation happens. Using RobotStudio for offline programming and simulation, or AppStudio for building application-specific screens without code, engineers can develop and simulate applications away from the production line. They can then connect the device to the robot for deployment.
That could reduce line-side engineering work when programs need updates or new applications require testing. Design World reports that one E-Device can be used with multiple E-Device-equipped robots, which may help plants with several compatible machines or training needs. ABB describes the workflow as a way to reduce engineering and commissioning time, but the announcement provides no measured savings or customer deployment data.
E-Device is not simply a tablet running robot software. Its physical controls include an emergency-stop button and a three-position enabling switch, which operators use during manual robot operation. ABB says the device complies with ISO 10218:2025 and carries CE and UL certifications.
The tablet or PC can also access online manuals, while its camera can capture troubleshooting images and save them to the robot’s backup folder. Pricing, regional availability, supported computer operating systems, and the specific compatible OmniCore models were not stated, so plants should confirm those points before planning a rollout.
