JBL’s new Live 780NC and 680NC push hard on noise cancellation, but comfort and design quirks steal some of the spotlight.

In a crowded market of wireless ANC headphones, JBL rolls out two new Live models that aim to stand out with form-factor choices and a bold feature set. The 780NC is the over-ear option, while the 680NC wears an on-ear design. What links them is a shared visual language—a bulky, hockey-puck-inspired cup design with a leatherette headband and a hinge that folds neatly into a compact form. They also share practical touches: a dedicated volume rocker on the left ear cup and a right cup housing USB-C charging, an active-noise-canceling button, and a combined power/Bluetooth switch. The right cup is also where you’ll find the touch controls JBL fans will expect to tap for playback and calls.

Initial comfort is a mixed bag. In hands-on testing, both units felt a little uncomfortable at first, which is not unusual for new cans. The tester notes that after several hours of use, the fit began to settle in—one of those things that can make or break a purchase if you plan long listening sessions or daily commutes. The distinct cup form factor matters here: the over-ear 780NC tends to create a larger seal and more passive isolation, while the on-ear 680NC sits lighter on the ear but can press more after extended wear.

On the audio side, the review flags a surprising difference between the two models. The biggest divergences aren’t just the cups themselves, but how that design translates into sound. JBL has managed to push improvements in ANC, the reviewer writes, yet the two models don’t share the same sonic character. In other words, if you’re chasing a particular flavor of JBL sound or a specific balance between clarity and bass, you’ll want to audition both to find the one that suits your ears best.

If you’re weighing these head-to-heads against mainstream players, these JBLs land in a familiar spot: solid, capable ANC with a few rough edges in comfort and a few quirkier design choices. The “heart-shaped” folding, for instance, helps with packing, a practical win for travelers and desk jockeys alike. But the physical controls—the mix of a tactile left-side rocker and a right-side cluster of USB-C, ANC, and BT-switch—will be a preference decision: some users prize tactile feedback for quick adjustments, while others might prefer a fully touch-based surface.

From a practitioner perspective, there are a few concrete takeaways. First, cup size and weight drive long-session comfort far more than marketing thin air—over-ear fans will likely tolerate the 780NC’s bulk better than on-ear wearers do with the 680NC. Second, control schemes matter in real-world use: physical buttons can win in noisy environments or while wearing gloves, but well-implemented touch surfaces can streamline daily use if you don’t mind a learning curve. Third, the form factor choice matters for portability and storage, but you’re trading off some comfort or acoustical behavior in the process. Finally, the two-model strategy is a clear JBL gambit to capture two audiences: those who want the classic over-ear feel and those who prefer a lighter, on-ear approach.

Verdict: Buy if you want JBL’s updated ANC with two distinct form factors and you’re willing to audition both to pick the better fit. Buy with caution if you’re especially sensitive to long-session comfort or you’re comparing against leaders in the space and want the most refined overall experience. In short, JBL has made real leaps here, but the comfort and design quirks mean you should try before you buy.
