McLaren Construction has agreed a partnership with FieldAI to deploy autonomous quadruped robots on UK construction sites, beginning with site documentation, progress verification and quality-control work.

The initial robot missions will capture 360-degree site imagery, generate point cloud data, compare installed work with design models, conduct safety-compliance patrols and support quality assurance. McLaren expects regular scans to create a visual and spatial record of work as it is installed, giving project teams a more continuous record than periodic manual inspections alone.

FieldAI’s software will analyse site data against project models to identify deviations between planned and installed conditions. McLaren said the aim is to shorten the time between installation and the identification of quality issues, supporting tolerance management and reducing rework.

The deployment is at an early operational stage. McLaren and FieldAI have announced the partnership and defined the initial use cases, but have not disclosed the number of quadruped robots involved, the first UK projects, deployment dates, financial terms or the specific robot hardware platform. No payload, runtime, sensor configuration or degrees-of-freedom specifications have been released.

McLaren Construction group pre-construction director Adam Nicholson said the company sees the robots as a step beyond machines limited to remote control or pre-programmed routes.

“Instead, we now have autonomous robots navigating stairs, doors and other obstacles and constantly working with our human teams to support productivity, safety and quality,” Nicholson said.

FieldAI describes its platform as Field Foundation Models, software that combines data-driven AI, physics-based reasoning and uncertainty quantification for work in changing physical environments. The company says its system does not require prior maps, fixed supporting infrastructure or pre-planned routes, which is significant on construction projects where access routes, installed components and hazards can change daily.

For McLaren, the immediate value is less about robotic construction work and more about automated evidence collection. A robot that can repeatedly traverse active areas and gather comparable imagery and spatial data could give site managers earlier visibility into incomplete work, installation errors and potential safety-compliance gaps. That depends on the system’s ability to operate reliably around workers, changing site layouts and the access constraints typical of UK projects.

FieldAI said the partnership marks its entry into the UK construction market. The company said its construction deployments already span hundreds of sites in Europe, Asia and North America. McLaren and FieldAI will work on UK regulatory and data-security requirements as the deployment scales.

The companies intend to expand the robots’ role beyond monitoring and modelling missions. FieldAI vice president of sales Patrick Purwin said future work could include site logistics, dexterous manipulation and multi-robot coordination.

Those later applications remain prospective. The confirmed first phase is focused on inspection, scanning and model-to-site verification, where quadruped mobility can address stairs, doors and uneven terrain but where the robots do not need to handle materials or perform installation tasks.
