Single-source brief: Better navigation may cut yard work, but these machines still need active oversight.

What Changed

The Verge reports that robot lawnmowers have improved in navigation and movement.

The outlet tested five mowers over three months in South Carolina. It found fewer cases of mowers getting stuck.

Network RTK is a key change. It uses cloud-linked reference stations for precise location data.

Some mowers also use lidar or vSLAM when their main signal drops. That can help near trees or roofs.

Improved all-wheel drive also helped models handle rougher ground, according to The Verge.

The Catch

These are not set-it-and-forget-it tools.

The Verge says one mower damaged a lawn patch for three days. Another cut two outdoor extension cords.

Hoses, cables, and cars remain hard for the machines to spot. Gates also still need manual help.

RTK coverage varies by home. Some systems need Wi-Fi or 4G service. Cloud-based navigation also raises long-term support questions.

Price and Buying Call

Tested prices ranged from $1,299 to $3,299.99.

The Roborock RockNeo Q110H was $1,299. The Husqvarna 420 IQ cost $3,299.

NetRTK service is advertised as free for a device’s life. That promise depends on each maker’s cloud service.

Verdict: Wait unless you can supervise it. These mowers deserve attention for large yards. Yet durability, cloud dependence, and future U.S. model availability remain unresolved.
