Matic Adds Point-and-Clean Controls

Single-source brief: Matic Cues adds gesture and voice controls, but cloud voice commands raise privacy trade-offs.

Matic has launched Matic Cues, according to The Verge.

The feature lets owners point at a mess and ask the robot to clean it. First, users say, “Hey, Matic.” Then they point and say, “clean here.”

The Verge reports the robot uses its five existing cameras for gesture control. That part works on-device. Matic says it will reach all existing Matic robots.

The update also adds a built-in voice assistant. It can handle plain-language requests, such as cleaning hard floors or kitchen toekicks.

The Catch: Voice Uses the Cloud

Gesture control stays on the robot, The Verge reports. Voice control does not fully stay local.

Matic processes the “Hey Matic” wake word on-device. Commands after that go to Google’s Gemini API, according to Matic.

Matic says those commands are anonymized. A chime signals when data leaves the device. The feature is opt-in, and users can disable Matic Cues and microphones in settings.

That means owners can use the pointing feature without accepting cloud voice commands.

Price and Buying Take

Matic Cues launched August 13 at 2 p.m. ET. The Verge says Matic’s price will rise September 9.

Its price is set to increase from $1,245 to $1,495. That is a $250 jump.

Verdict: Buy now only if you already wanted a Matic. The gesture feature sounds useful for quick spills. Yet the $1,245 entry price remains steep. Voice convenience also comes with a cloud-data trade-off.
