FCC Rules Put Future Robot Vacuums in Limbo

Current models remain on sale. New foreign-made robots face a tougher approval path.

The FCC has added foreign-produced advanced robotic devices to its Covered List, according to Vacuum Wars.

That move generally blocks new FCC equipment approvals for affected future robot vacuums. Those approvals are needed to import, market, and sell new models in the United States.

This is not an immediate ban on robot vacuums already in stores or homes.

Vacuum Wars reports that existing FCC-authorized models may still be owned, used, imported, and sold.

What Brands Are Saying

ECOVACS, Eufy, Narwal, and Shark said their current U.S. robot vacuums remain available and supported.

Eufy said its current products will continue to receive updates and customer support. Narwal said its certified U.S. products are unaffected.

Shark said it is still weighing options for future models.

No responding brand announced a specific change to its U.S. launch plans.

The Catch for New Models

Foreign makers may seek a Conditional Approval through the Department of War, Vacuum Wars reports.

Applicants would need to disclose ownership, software, supply chains, and manufacturing details. They also must submit plans to establish or expand U.S. production.

Applications are due by January 1, 2028. Approval is not guaranteed.

The Department of War has final discretion over those decisions.

Buy or Wait?

Buy if you want a current model. The available evidence says existing authorized robots remain supported and legal to buy.

Wait if you are holding out for a future model. Launch timing, pricing, and which brands gain approval remain unknown.
