That means the IT and OT teams must co create data pipelines, standardize interfaces, and establish governance for long term value. Third, skilled trades aren’t displaced so much as augmented where automation centers around craft labor. When robots or automation touch linemen, inspectors, welders, or other technicians, the human role shifts toward supervision, inspection, and complex decision making, while robots handle repetitive or dangerous tasks.

Looking ahead, the industry will likely see deeper, more predictable returns as automation and AI are embedded into daily workflows. Edge AI, on board pattern recognition, and integrated asset monitors promise faster, more actionable feedback on the plant floor. The overarching message is clear: automation is not magic. It is a disciplined program of people, processes, and technology that, when aligned, can deliver measurable gains in cycle times, throughput, and product quality without sacrificing the workforce.
