It also includes how long the robot can stay productive while handling edge cases, navigation errors, object recognition failures, and the inevitable messiness of occupied homes.

Humanoids are especially sensitive to downtime because their advantage over simpler mobile robots comes from generality. That generality is costly. Every additional degree of freedom, sensor, or software capability adds complexity, and complexity shows up in mean time between failures, maintenance load, and operator burden.

Tau Robotics’ decision to offer robots for hire suggests the company is trying to monetize that generality directly. If the service works, customers get a labor outcome. If it does not, the company inherits the burden of support, repair, and operational overhead. That is the deployment reality investors should care about.

Why humanoids are hard in homes

Homes are hostile environments for robots because they are unstructured by design. A warehouse can be optimized for machine navigation; a home cannot.
