Carlo Gavazzi launches DCM2 DC energy meters for battery storage and megawatt charging

Carlo Gavazzi Automation has launched the DCM2 series of direct-connection energy meters for DC electrical systems, expanding its metering offer for high-power battery storage, DC distribution, microgrids and EV charging.

The company positions the DCM2 for systems operating at up to 1,500 volts DC and 1,500 amps DC, with applications reaching 2.25 MW. That rating puts the meters in the range of large battery energy storage systems and megawatt charging systems for trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles, where operators need to measure energy flow on high-current DC circuits.

The DCM2 system combines a voltage and current measurement transducer with a display unit. The display supports RS485 Modbus RTU and Ethernet Modbus TCP communications, giving operators a route to connect meter data to industrial monitoring, energy-management or supervisory control systems.

Carlo Gavazzi also lists real-time temperature monitoring, Modbus diagnostic alerts, sealable terminal caps and a secure busbar installation arrangement among the product’s features.

For battery-storage and charging operators, the practical value is not faster charging by itself. A meter does not determine a charger’s power-delivery rate or a battery system’s cycle time. Its job is to provide usable electrical data at a point where DC voltage, current and delivered energy must be tracked. At the DCM2’s stated 2.25 MW application level, that data can be relevant to billing, load management, equipment diagnostics and performance verification.

The Modbus interfaces could reduce the number of protocol gateways required when a project already uses Modbus-capable PLCs, SCADA platforms or energy-management software. Integration still requires engineering work: teams must define meter locations, configure communications, map registers into the monitoring system and validate readings against the project’s operational and financial reporting requirements.

For megawatt-scale truck charging, metering becomes more consequential than it is at lower-power installations. Heavy-duty charging depots may need to reconcile energy consumed by individual chargers, monitor DC distribution equipment and identify losses or abnormal temperatures before they affect charger availability. The DCM2’s temperature monitoring and diagnostic alerts are intended to support that operating model, although Carlo Gavazzi did not publish performance data showing how the features affect maintenance intervals or uptime.

Pricing, sales geography and availability timing were not disclosed. It is also unclear whether Carlo Gavazzi intends the DCM2 launch as a broader expansion of its DC metering portfolio beyond this series.
