Schlage Sense Pro auto unlocks with UWB and Matter

By Riley Hart3 min read

Your front door unlocks as you walk up, no phone taps required. Schlage’s Sense Pro is the company’s first Matter-over-Thread smart lock and the first model from Schlage to dispense with a physical keyhole entirely. At $399, it positions itself as the cleanest, most futuristic entry system the brand has offered to date.

Reviews show that the Sense Pro hinges on ultra-wideband to sense your proximity and unlock automatically as you approach. There’s no need to enter a code, tap a phone, or touch a key. The result, in early impressions, is faster and more reliable hands-free unlocking than the geofencing and radio tricks some other smart locks rely on. The Verge reviewer notes the experience is notably smooth, and that UWB offers a level of trust and responsiveness that has been hard to achieve with mobile unlock schemes used at other doors. It’s a feature that also aligns with the broader push toward truly keyless homes, a direction many builders and brands are chasing.

On compatibility, the Sense Pro is positioned as a bridge to a broader ecosystem. It’s Schlage’s first lock to support Matter-over-Thread, which means it can participate in a growing, cross-vendor smart home standard and talk to other Matter devices and hubs. The lock also marks Schlage’s foray into Apple’s Home Key hands-free unlock, a capability that leverages the iPhone’s secure element and UWB presence signals rather than a screen tap or passcode. Google and Samsung users aren’t left out in theory, but their hands-free unlock support is described as coming soon through Aliro, suggesting a staggered rollout as alliances and integrations evolve. In practice, that means the Sense Pro could become easier to integrate into a multi-brand smart home over time, even as you start with an Apple-centric workflow.

The catch is nontrivial. The Sense Pro is a leap in convenience, but it intensifies two familiar concerns for smart locks: privacy and lock-in. Hands-free unlock and continuous proximity signaling inevitably create new data points about when you come and go, and how often you’re at home, which owners and manufacturers will need to manage with care. And because the lock relies on a shared ecosystem (Matter, Home Key, Aliro for cross-brand support), adoption may feel uneven for a while. For households committed to a single platform or those wary of expanding data footprints, the experience may feel over-engineered relative to a simple traditional lock.

From a practitioner standpoint, there are a few practical takeaways. First, if you prize ease of entry and you’re already deep in Apple’s ecosystem, the Sense Pro offers a compelling upgrade path that could simplify daily routines and reduce the friction of locking and unlocking. Second, if you want cross-brand flexibility, the Matter-over-Thread angle is promising, but expect a period of evolving compatibility as Google, Samsung, and third-party hubs mature their integrations. Third, the upfront cost matters: at $399, you’re paying a premium not just for the lock itself but for the promise of future interoperability and hands-free access. Finally, back up plans still matter. While the design eliminates a physical keyhole, it also relies on electronic and network systems; users should consider battery life, firmware updates, and securing associated accounts as part of the decision.

Schlage’s Sense Pro, as reviewed today, embodies a clear industry shift toward seamless entry experiences anchored by standardization like Matter and the growing reach of Apple’s Home Key. It’s a bold first step that delivers a cleaner aesthetic and a smoother unlock, tempered by the privacy and interoperability tradeoffs that come with moving from a mechanical key to a connected, data-driven door.
